Bird Watching

Bird watching in Bhutan is the most ideal and easiest places to spot birds. Unlike the other Himalayan countries, which suffer from high deforestation and environmental degradation, Bhutan’s rich, diverse and beautiful forests form some of the best remaining representatives of forests habitats in the Himalayas. Another obvious reason is that, Bhutan being predominantly a Buddhist nation, the Bhutanese strongly respect all forms of life, hence the natural habitat has resulted in an avifauna that is not only marvelously diverse but also remarkably visible and approachable.

So much so that the country is claimed to be forming the major part of an area of especially high biological diversity known as the Eastern Himalayan “conservation hotspots”.

Nearly 650 species of birds have so far been recorded in Bhutan ( the rare endangered ones being found in the so called ‘endemic bird areas of Bhutan) and a significant number of these are far easier to see here than any where else in the world because of the intact natural habitat.

Some of the globally endangered species include Ward’s Tragopan, Rufous-necked Hornbill, Blue fronted Robin, and the fabulous Ibisbill. Any further information needed on a seasonal pattern of birding can be made possible by picking up certain regions according to the time of the year and the duration.
